FADE IN.
EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - NIGHT
A FATHER (40s) drives down the road, DAUGHTER (14) silent in the passenger seat. The headlights beam out, revealing only the shadowy edges of trees.
A GIRL (11) comes into view, bright white in the headlights. She is standing in the middle of the road, right in the path of the car.
DAUGHTER
Stop!
The car swerves. Dirt flies up into the air. The car squeals to a halt, an inch away from the girl. Father and daughter sit frozen, panic bare on their faces.
The daughter climbs out of the car. The girl is still there, not moved.
DAUGHTER

GIRL

The daughter looks back at her father. He pauses in thought, then nods shakily. She extends a hand to the girl, who ignores it, climbing in the back of the car. The daughter returns to her seat, exchanging a confused look with her father.
FATHER

GIRL
You'll see it, don't worry.
The car lapses into silence. The daughter looks back at the girl. She's staring out of the car window. At this angle, the daughter can almost see something...
A scar. A long pale scar stretching across her neck.
The daughter quickly turns back, shaken.

The trees part, revealing a manor in the middle of a huge clearing. Towering balconies shiver under the force of the wind, turrets scraping the sky. The daughter looks up in awe.
FATHER
You sure this is your uncle's place?
GIRL
Of course.
FATHER
You stay here while I check if anyone's still here.
The girl says nothing. The father leaves the car, and walks up the long path to the house.
The daughter drums her fingers on her car seat. She looks back at the girl, who is still staring wide-eyed out of the window.
Before she can change her mind, the daughter slips out of the car.
DAUGHTER
Dad! Wait!
The father turns around,
