INT. CASTLE CORRIDOR
CATHLEEN MOORGATE (22) storms down the dimly lit corridor. A lamp swings in her hand, soft orange light creeping into the cracks and crevices of the old stone.
Cathleen is on a mission, and she is determined. Her eyes spark with confidence behind her nun's veil, and her lips are pursed in focus. Control and power seeps from every of her being, and she moves with the irrevocable faith of those with true faith.
A thick key is held tightly in her other hand. This she holds with pride, with the knowledge that this task has been placed to her, and only to her. She smiles, safe in her knowledge that this is the path God called her towards, and that the path is calling back.
The corridor comes to an end, and she stops, setting the lamp down with a clank. She holds the key out reverently, and places it into the lock. A look of pride passes across her face. She turns the key. Gears grind against one another, whining out into the air. Slowly but surely, the door opens.
INT. CASTLE ROOM
It's dark and dingy. Shadows cling to the wall like forbidden creatures. A GIRL (12) sits on the middle of the bed, eyes closed, back straight. The bed is in the exact centre of the circular room, blankets and rough sheets strewn around it.
She is humming softly to herself. The door opens and her eyes snap open. She stops humming, head twisting round to follow the intruder. Cathleen.
She enters and locks the door behind her. The girl is staring, madly, hungrily.
Cathleen totters around the room, lighting lanterns with a practiced ease, each blooming into life with sputters and sparks.
The girl is still staring. Cathleen ignores this with as much confidence as she has in everything else. Finally, all the lanterns are lit.
Cathleen turns and faces the girl. A flash of pity alights in her eyes.
CATHLEEN
It's time.
The girl says nothing. Her eyes dart to Cathleen's pocket.
2.
Cathleen reaches into it and draws out a box. Small, but intricately detailed. Ornate, but not overly so. She opens the clasp and holds it out to the girl.
CATHLEEN
You know what to do.
This time the girl reacts. She starts breathing faster, her chest rapidly exanding and falling with each one.
CATHLEEN
Please. Don't make me force you.
A strangled noise escapes the girl. She stops hyperventilating, and lifts one long emancipated finger up to her mouth.
In one vicious movement, she bites into it, blood running down and soaking into the bed sheet.
She extends her finger out to Cathleen. She rushes forward, catching the blood in the box.
New skin stretches over the girl's wound, building, repairing. The blood flow stems to a halt. The girl pulls her hand back, and places it back to position on her knee.
Cathleen smiles and clicks the box shut.
CATHLEEN
Thank you. Thank you for everything you do for us.
The girl just stares.
Cathleen turns and walks away. The door is opened, and then locked behind her. The sound of a lock clangs into place like a death bell.
The girl turns her head back, and closes her eyes. The room returns to stillness, once again.
