"A Film by Vera Vaughn" Analysis
“A Film by Vera Vaughn” by Sorel
Narrative
Establishes Vera, watched from cameras inside her computer. She is stalked by someone. She is also within a film made by another person. The lines between what is real and what is not is broken, with the two interacting. Implies a death at end. Complex, mind screwy.
Genre
Psychological thriller
Representation
Both women. One meek, one assertive. Convergence of technology, film and reality.
Audience
Initially positioned with Vera so we understand her fear of being watched.
Micro Elements
Small amount of settings. Low key lighting, very dark. Not very strong colours. Not strong music. At night. Lots of silence and long takes. Slow pace of editing. Close up shots of eyes. Ideas of voyeurism, being watched when unexpected.
Personal Response
I liked the trippy, complicated narrative. I also liked the feelings of isolation constructed through the micro elements.
