Slap Analysis

Slap Analysis

Narrative

  • own inner conflict arising from confusion over gender identity
  • external judgement from societies perceived notions of gender
  • Simple narrative structure

Genre

  • Drama
  • Social realism

Representation

  • Possibly trans character
  • Targets traditional expectations of gender
  • How society treats those who have a different experience of gender
  • Lower class white
  • Questioning gender identity
  • Contrast of aggression released through traditionally male activity and enjoyment through feminine clothing
  • Slurs mentioned, insults
  • Toxic masculinity

Audience

  • Positioned with gender questioning main character, so we empathise with them when they are insulted and wrongly assumed gay
  • Made to feel uncomfortable, to question what they believe about gender and how society treats gender differences

Micro Elements

  • Lewd posters suggest idea of hyperconstructed idea of femininity
  • Lots of silence and lack of music to create uncomfortable feel
    • Also focuses in on subject
  • Montage with jump cuts to move through time
  • Uses mirror
    • Theme of duelling identity, loss of self
    • Crack in mirror indicates distorted identity, mc not strong identity
  • Cut from silence to fighting
  • MC returns to boxing at end, ironic in that MC returns to very masculine activity as a way of recovering from insults against him from exploring gender identity

What I Liked

I liked how they explored gender issues without softening the topic for audiences, they depicted it realistically which has more impact than if they tried to sugarcoat it. The use of mirrors to reflect the mc's state of identity was also interesting thematically.
