Tight Jeans
Narrative
- waiting for car to drive to place
- conversation between three people
- cyclical, ending infers conversation similar to the one just shown will happen
- not strong structure, just through dialogue
- inciting incident comes from guy wearing jeans
Genre
- light comedy
- comedy comes from discussion of racial issues from different, humorous angle
- comedic aspects strength may come from background of viewer and position in reference to the subject matter
Representation
- Urban lower class black teens
- presented as group of friends, good relationship
- not fitting in Alvarado's representation theory; not dangerous, sexualised, exotic, or vulnerable
- talking about black issues from comedic black perspective
- white women marrying black men
- additionally, the main issue they discuss came from the white male fear of the black men 'taking their women' and thus created the idea of them being more sexual, savage people who couldn't control their urges, through the biological difference of a larger penis. This racist idea perpetuated the idea that white people were of polite society, and that white women were vulnerable and needed rescuing from the 'terrifyingly sexual' black men, ignoring the fact that white men did also rape women, most of the time not even considering their own actions rape, ie rape in marriage. This short is interesting as it turns this racist idea that was used to subjugate black men into a way of making them feel better and superior about themselves over white men.
- sexualised language
- lots of swears and slang
- feeling of community
Audience
- positioned with the teenagers
- comedy may come across differently to different social groups
Micro Elements
- montage editing at beginning to create sense of place
- focuses on market, clothes, relating to title
- music and ambient noise
- dialogue more theatrical than filmic
- majority dialogue
- eyelevel midshot
- grey environment with colourful clothes
- how clothes are integral to identity
- font style similar to 'Do The Right Thing' by Spike Lee, an important film for black representation
- teenagers wearing similar clothing, clothing as being part of a group
- thus the tight jeans are outside that group and are used in the context of their conversation as a perpetuation of stereotypes and otherness, seperating white and black men as having biological difference
Personal Thoughts
I didn't like this one, the comedy and the style of the video both fell flat. I will not be taking many elements from this short. I did like the ideas of representation it brought forth however.
