The Arrival
The Arrival
Narrative
- depicts change of mind
- small moment in normal person's life, could happen to anyone
- centres around a decision
Genre
- Drama
- Realism
Representation
- woman's view on birth
- fits into hegemonic gender roles as she eventually comes to accept her having a baby and looks forward to it
- depicts stereotypical idea that all woman will enjoy having a child, or want one
- subversive in that she was not in a committed relationship before becoming pregnant, came from fling
- British middle class, money not issue in affording baby
- reflects ideas of abortion and choice
- casual mention of abortion, treats it as normalised choice, which is good
Audience
- audience's opinions on abortion and birth choices will affect how we perceive her decision
- positioned with her as everything we see is from her perspective
- as she comes to her decision, reality changes to match her mind
- subjectivity over objectivity for emotional affect
Micro Elements
- lights change to indicate train passing by station
- first shots hazy, help introduce scene like we are stepping into cafe ourselves
- slow zoom from long to mid to closeup to mid
- one take
- ambient noise of wind sets time as in winter
- starts with blues and greys, subdued colours
- voiceover matches with physical performance, thus we know who the voiceover is her thoughts
- train passing by reflects her change in decision, going from likely not having baby to having it
- change in colour also reflects decision, blues to yellows, like dawn
- white clothes contrast against dark background
- also connotes pureness, goodness
Elements I Might Use
I like how the lighting and colour so fully represents her thoughts. Realism is second to representing her emotions. Each frame carefully composed with thoughts of how each element will create a response in the audience and reflect the woman. I want to have this level of detail and artistry in my own work.
